Bean Broad Fava Sweet Lorane Improved Organic Seeds

Bean Broad Fava Sweet Lorane Improved Organic Seeds

Vicia faba

Item #3151

65-100 days. One of the earliest vegetables to sow, fava beans thrive in cool soils. Sweet Lorane is an improved small-seeded variety with better flavor. Fresh beans taste similar to chickpeas. Dried beans are delicious in soups and stews. As a cover crop, favas fix nitrogen and the large, deep roots break up heavy and compacted soil. Seedlings and plants are very cold hardy.

This packet sows one ten-foot row.

CAUTION: People with the rare genetic condition called Favism (G6PD deficient) should not consume fava beans.

Special germination instructions: Soak seed for 12 to 24 hours before sowing.

Harvesting: Beans are at the peak of flavor just before the hilums, the saddle shaped scar at the end of the seed turns brown. Fava beans can be harvested during several stages of development: a) when young, 2” to 3” long, to be eaten whole, b) when the pod shell turns green and the bean is a light green color, to use the beans fresh, or c) when shell turns hard and brown, and seeds inside are dry, to store on the shelf for cooking at a later date
