| Item #1098 |
Perennial to USDA zones 3-4. Blooms for 3-6 weeks in summer to late summer. Full sun. 10-12" tall and wide. A dwarf penstemon in a wide range of colors - white, pink, salmon, lilac, purple, and red. Cambridge's tubular flowers are 1/2" to 1" long and snapdragon-like in appearance. A magnet for hummingbirds, it is pretty in the flower border and used also makes a nice cut flower. This very hardy Penstemon is native to the Mountains of Colorado, Utah, New Mexico, and Mexico. It is short-lived in warm winter climates. Performs best in very well drained soils. Very rich or moist soils will shorten its life span. A good xeric plant once it is established as it does not like a lot of water. Nice addition to neglected areas of the yard, well-drained containers, or a rock garden. Penstemon is also known as Beards Tongue due to its bristly hairs on the lower lip that extend into the throat.
When to plant outside: Sow in early spring, 2-4 weeks before average last frost or in late fall.
When to start inside: Sow 10-12 weeks before average last frost.
Special Germination Instructions: Seed requires light to germinate - press lightly into soil surface and keep moist. Germination is best in cool temperatures of 55 - 65 degrees. Be patient - takes around 20-35 days to sprout.
