Annual. Early summer to fall. 6" tall. 18" wide. Full sun. Portulaca (also called Moss Rose) is a low-growing sun-loving succulent plant with 1" - 2" double, rose-like flowers in brilliant colors of red, cerise, rose-pink, orange, yellow, white, and pastel shades. This warm season annual grows 6" tall and spreads 18" wide with foliage that is needle-like, succulent, and trailing. It self-sows readily and often comes back the next year. Its flowers open in the sun and close in the shade, when cloudy, and at night. Portulaca prefers well-drained, sandy loam and is perfect for rock gardens or hanging baskets in hot sunny places. It is also an excellent annual ground cover for warm locations such as parking strips, dry banks and areas with reflected heat near bricks, rocks, or concrete. It is very drought tolerant - water only occasionally after established or if there are signs of wilting.
When to plant outside: Sow seed in spring after the average last frost date and when temperatures are warm.
When to start inside: Recommended for cooler summer climates such as those in New England or the Pacific Northwest. Sow 4-6 weeks before average last frost.
Special Germination Instructions: Seeds require light to germinate. Lightly press seed into the soil surface. To improve germination, pre-chill seed in moistened soil in the refrigerator for two weeks.
