Bean Pole Asparagus Yard Long Seed
Vigna - sesquipedalis
$2.39

Item #0115

The unique bean/pea flavor of 'dow ghok' is a favorite in the orient. The Asparagus or 'Yard Long' beans are as 'good to eat as they are strange to behold'. Not really a true bean, they are grown just like a pole bean and have their own unique flavor which reminds some of asparagus. They are easy to grow, almost indestructible! When the plants are young, the leaves and stems can also be steamed and eaten. Yard Long beans are of sub-tropical origin and usually need a long warm growing period. However, this variety was specifically developed for gardens in North America. Vining plants reach 6'-8' long and have beautiful purple flowers. The beans are best harvested when they are 12"-18" long, but can reach 24' long. See inside instructions on how to build a bean teepee. This packet plants 2 bean teepees.

When to plant outside: RECOMMENDED. Sow in spring, after average last frost. If the weather is cold and wet, wait for warmer weather.

When to start inside: Not recommended.

Special Germination Instructions: It isn?t absolutely necessary, but seeds can be treated with an inoculant containing nitrogen-fixing bacteria. This may help plant growth and production if you are planting beans or peas in an area for the first time. Seeds that do not come up can be immediately replaced. BUY NEW SEED EVERY YEAR. Bean seed does not store well and old seed is a big contributor to home garden failure.
