Radishes are red on the outside and white on the inside, right? Not for this variety! Mantang Hong, sometimes called, the 'Watermelon Radish', is white on the outside (with green shoulders) and red on the inside. It is fun to serve it on an hors d'oeuvres tray sliced and sprinkled with black sesame seeds to make it look like watermelon slices! The radishes are 3.25" in diameter and are best planted in late summer or early fall. It is also sometimes called the 'Red Meat' radish. Grow this unique variety, and you will be the talk of your neighborhood!
When to Plant Outside: RECOMMENDED. Late summer or fall, 7-10 weeks before the average first fall frost date. In warm climates, it can be planted anytime in fall or winter.
When to start inside: Not recommended.
Special Sowing & Germination Instructions: Radishes love cool temperatures to grow in, but fairly warm soil to germinate. After seeding radishes, place black plastic over soil for 3 days to warm the soil and encourage germination. Remove plastic immediately after seedlings appear.
Harvesting: Harvest in late fall or early winter before the ground freezes. Radishes can be harvested at any size. The sweet flavor is best when the crop matures quickly. Though, as a winter radish, it will hold longer in the ground than a spring or summer radish, extending the harvest period.
