| Item #0072 |
Though Burgess Buttercup certainly wouldn’t take first place in a vegetable beauty contest, many lovers of winter squash say that the buttercups are the best tasting winter squash. The orange flesh is very sweet, stringless, and fiberless. 4 to 5 squash fruits grow on each 6-foot vine. The flattened turban-shaped squash are typically 5”-8” in diameter and weigh 3-5 pounds each. Mature fruits will store for 4-5 months after harvest. This packet plants: 5 hills or 15 plants after thinning.
When to plant outside: Spring, 2-4 weeks after the average last frost date and when soil temperatures have risen above 60 degrees.
When to start inside: Not recommended, unless you live in a very short short season climate. 3-4 weeks before the average last frost date. Sow in individual pots for direct planting.
Special Sowing & Germination Instructions:Seeding into a black plastic mulch is highly recommended, because it keeps down weeds, traps moisture, and warms the soil.
