Easy Easter Basket Grass

There is something about the spring timing of the Easter season that puts everyone in the mood to celebrate the pastel colors and and newly verdant landscape. No matter what it looks like outside, we can easily bring some spring green into our homes by growing our own Easter basket grass. The best part? It only takes 6 days from seed to finish!

There are lots or recipes for doing this, but mine allows you to grow grass to fit any container you want.

Start by growing some quick-germinating grass in a broad, shallow, well drained tray that’s a little bigger than the container you want to fill. Wheat grass and cat grass (oats) both work really well. Soak your seeds for about 12 hours then sow thickly on top of 1″ of seed starting media. Cover them with 1/4″ of the same media and water thoroughly. Place the tray in a sunny window or under grow lights. You’ll start to see germination in as few as 2 days, then the fun begins. Once the plants are about 1 1/2″ tall, they should be rooted well enough to work with.

Step 1: Trace and cut 2 pieces of cardboard that fit snugly into the bottom of your container. Wrap one of the pieces in a couple of layers of plastic wrap to keep it dry. You’ll see why in a minute.

Step 2: Line up your cardboard templates with your flat of grass to approximate the cuts, then cut the grass to the shape of your template. Slide the plastic covered piece under the shaped mat of grass for support while moving.

Step 3: Line your chosen container with plastic wrap to keep it dry. You may need a couple pieces if your container is large. Place the plain cardboard piece in the bottom of the container to hold down the plastic wrap.

Step 4: Using the plastic covered cardboard for support, place the grass in to the container. Tuck the extra plastic down between the grass/soil and the container to keep it dry. There you have it, a custom-sized Easter basket full of live, springy grass! There’s only one thing left to do:

Step 5: Decorate!

These baskets are quick, easy, customizable and bring a big burst of life into the house. And, if you have cats or health enthusiasts in your home, they can have a life beyond the basket as a dietary supplement of juice.
