wrong ones leads to frustration and wasted effort. Some herbs are perfectly happy on windowsills, while others struggle no matter what you do.<\/p>\n\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Basil grows quickly indoors<\/strong> and produces well, but only if you give it enough light (that\u2019s one of the reasons why I\u2019ve never managed to grow it indoors successfully). It&#8217;s one of the easiest herbs to <a href=\"https:\/\/proxy-botanicalinterestscom.epicgardening.com\/community\/blog\/seed-starting-indoors\/\">start from seed<\/a> and will keep producing as long as you harvest regularly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Parsley handles lower light better than most herbs, making it perfect for windowsills that don&#8217;t get full sun. Both flat-leaf and curly varieties work, though flat-leaf tends to have better flavor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chives are also <strong>nearly indestructible on windowsills<\/strong> and are one of my go-to options. They tolerate lower light, don&#8217;t mind being harvested heavily, and will keep producing with minimal care. The mild onion flavor works in countless dishes. Plus, you can grow them in soil or water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Skip rosemary unless you have a very bright windowsill. It needs intense light that most indoor spaces can&#8217;t provide, and it&#8217;s also quite sensitive to overwatering. Outdoor rosemary plants brought inside for winter often decline despite our best efforts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Plant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.botanicalinterests.com\/products\/english-thyme-seeds?_pos=1&amp;_psq=thyme&amp;_ss=e&amp;_v=1.0\">thyme<\/a> outdoors instead. It&#8217;s a hardy herb that struggles indoors for similar reasons. It <strong>wants bright light and tends to get leggy<\/strong> and weak without it. Most windowsill herb failures come down to drainage<strong> issues that the wrong container either creates<\/strong>, or makes worse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Drainage holes are a must for windowsill herbs. These plants hate sitting in water, and without drainage, you&#8217;re basically guaranteed to overwater and kill them with <a href=\"https:\/\/extension.umd.edu\/resource\/root-rots-indoor-plants\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">root rot<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Medium-sized pots <\/strong>work well for most herbs. While you can grow in smaller containers, restricted roots will mean a limited harvest. Avoid massive containers that hold too much moisture (and won\u2019t fit on your windowsill anyway).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Group pots on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.botanicalinterests.com\/products\/1020-universal-bottom-tray?_pos=1&amp;_psq=tray&amp;_ss=e&amp;_v=1.0&amp;variant=45525428568317\">a waterproof tray<\/a> to protect your windowsill from water damage. If you&#8217;re impatient, buy a small plant and divide it immediately into several pots. This is where you should put basil and any other full sun herbs you&#8217;re determined to grow indoors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>East and west windows work for parsley, chives, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.botanicalinterests.com\/products\/common-mint-seeds?_pos=1&amp;_psq=mint&amp;_ss=e&amp;_v=1.0\">mint<\/a>. They&#8217;ll get 4 to 6 hours of direct sun, which isn&#8217;t ideal but is workable for these more shade-tolerant herbs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>North-facing windows don&#8217;t provide enough light for any herbs to thrive. You can <strong>supplement with a grow light<\/strong> if that&#8217;s your only option, but herbs won&#8217;t perform well with just north window light.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rotate pots weekly so all sides get light exposure.
