{"id":891,"date":"2024-08-23T10:22:34","date_gmt":"2024-08-23T10:22:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/proxy-botanicalinterestscom.epicgardening.com\/community\/blog\/?p=891"},"modified":"2024-08-23T10:22:35","modified_gmt":"2024-08-23T10:22:35","slug":"10-crops-that-grow-in-60-days","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.botanicalinterests.com\/community\/blog\/10-crops-that-grow-in-60-days\/","title":{"rendered":"10 Crops That Grow in 60 Days"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Summer is in full swing and it has me thinking about all the tasty fall crops I can still sow and harvest in the two months before a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.botanicalinterests.com\/product\/Frost-Maps\">frost is likely in my area<\/a>. So if you are also right up against the two-month mark and also want to squeeze in just a little more gardening, I suggest trying frost-tolerant crops (also called &#8220;cool season&#8221;). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Several of the frost-tolerant crops I grow are even more enjoyable in late summer because cool temperatures of fall will sweeten my leafy greens (kale is particularly improved by a kiss of fall frost), and I can worry less about pests and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.botanicalinterests.com\/product\/bolting-how-to-prevent\">bolting<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But you may notice that these crops seem to take longer-and you&#8217;re correct! Late summer\/early fall crops may take a couple of more weeks to reach maturity than usual as hours of daylight shorten and temperatures cool.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"Try_10_of_My_Favorite_Varieties_To_Sow_in_Late_Summer._They_Will_Not_Disappoint!\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Try 10 of My Favorite Varieties To Sow in Late Summer. They Will Not Disappoint!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.botanicalinterests.com\/category\/Arugula\">Arugula<\/a>\u00a0sown in late summer\/fall provides a mellower flavor, and attracts flea beetles less than spring-sown crops.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.botanicalinterests.com\/category\/Beets\">Beets<\/a>\u00a0are silky, earthy, and delicious. We love them roasted, pickled, or raw.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.botanicalinterests.com\/product\/Rapini-Broccoli-Raab-Seeds\">Broccoli Raab<\/a>\u00a0is so fast, and what a delicacy! You can cut it 2\u20133 times and keep enjoying the delicate, slightly spicy flavor for weeks.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.botanicalinterests.com\/product\/Georgia-Southern-Collards-Seeds\">Collards<\/a>\u00a0are heat tolerant and survive to 20\u00b0F, which lends to my love of this productive, heirloom green.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.botanicalinterests.com\/category\/Kale\">Kale<\/a>\u00a0just keeps on going past first frost, getting sweeter, and adding depths to soups, and diversity to fall salads.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.botanicalinterests.com\/product\/Dwarf-Blue-Curled-Kale-Seeds\">&#8216;Dwarf Blue Curled&#8217;<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.botanicalinterests.com\/product\/Redbor-Kale-Seeds\">&#8216;Redbor&#8217;<\/a>\u00a0are exceptionally cold tolerant and the latter&#8217;s purple color intensifies after frost.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.botanicalinterests.com\/product\/Lacinato-Dinosaur-Kale\">&#8216;Lacinato Dinosaur&#8217;<\/a>\u00a0is my favorite!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.botanicalinterests.com\/product\/Purple-Vienna-Kohlrabi-Seeds\">Kohlrabi<\/a>\u00a0has the crunch of an apple and is mildly sweet with a touch of a mild radish flavor. I love it raw with a sprinkle of salt.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.botanicalinterests.com\/category\/Lettuce\">Lettuce<\/a>\u00a0is a staple in my garden all summer long, and I love to grow a bunch of different varieties, but always the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.botanicalinterests.com\/product\/Marvel-of-Four-Seasons-Butterhead-Lettuce-Seeds\">&#8216;Marvel of Four Seasons&#8217;<\/a>\u00a0that glows cranberry red as the days shorten, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.botanicalinterests.com\/product\/Little-Gem-Mini-Romaine-Lettuce-Seeds\">&#8216;Little Gem&#8217;<\/a>\u00a0that forms a perfect, small romaine head. Both are very heat and frost tolerant.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.botanicalinterests.com\/category\/Peas\">Peas<\/a>\u00a0are for fall, too!\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.botanicalinterests.com\/product\/Oregon-Sugar-Pod-II-Snow-Pea-Seeds\">&#8216;Oregon Sugar Pod II&#8217;<\/a>\u00a0is my favorite pea for fall because it is not only delicious, but also mildew resistant, an issue I often battle in the late summer.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.botanicalinterests.com\/category\/Radish\">Radishes<\/a>\u00a0are always welcome in our kitchen, and late summer is the time to sow winter radishes because they only form during shortening days. I grow\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.botanicalinterests.com\/product\/Miyashige-White-Daikon-Radish-Seeds\">daikon<\/a>\u00a0(If you&#8217;ve never tried daikon you are missing out! It is easy, great for the soil, and delicious.);\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.botanicalinterests.com\/product\/Round-Black-Spanish-Radish-Seeds\">black radishes<\/a>; and the stunning, scarlet centered,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.botanicalinterests.com\/product\/Mantanghong-Watermelon-Radish-Seeds\">watermelon radish<\/a>. When you remove (and eat) the greens these radishes store for a month or more in the crisper.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.botanicalinterests.com\/category\/Spinach\">Spinach<\/a>\u00a0is also sweetened with cooling temperatures and can over-winter, even in my climate (USDA zone 5B). I like to sow some every couple of weeks, so I have plenty of fresh spinach on hand; any extra I quickly blanch and freeze, and the last succession will overwinter giving me early spring greens.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>There&#8217;s more to grow, too!
