Gherkins are tiny cucumbers used for pickles, and these are the best; seedless, bitter-free, and uniform in shape. Use as small as 1½" long, or up to 4" for making excellent sweet pickles, French cornichons ("little horns"), or for fresh use. Plants are vining at up to 72"; grow against a trellis or fence for support.

Botanical Name: Cucumis sativus

Days to Maturity: 60 Days

Family: Cucurbitaceae

Native: Southern Asia

Hardiness: Frost-sensitive annual

Plant Dimensions: 72" vines

Variety Information: 'Hokus' is quick to produce small-spined, crunchy cucumbers. 'Hokus' is a parthenocarpic type cucumber that is best when harvested at under 4".

Type: Parthenocarpic

When to Sow Outside: RECOMMENDED. 1 to 2 weeks after your average last frost date, and when soil temperature is at least 60°F, ideally 70°–90°F.

When to Start Inside: 2 to 4 weeks before your average last frost date. Cucumbers are sensitive to root disturbance; sow in biodegradable pots.

Days to Emerge: 5 – 10 Days

Seed Depth: ½"

Seed Spacing: A group of 2 seeds every 12"

Row Spacing: 36"

Thinning: When 3 leaves, thin to 1 plant every 12"

Harvesting: Pick, and pick some more! Overly mature cucumbers on the vine will slow production of new cucumbers. Cut the stem rather than pulling at the fruit, as stems are fragile. To increase the quality and storage time, once picked, immediately immerse in cold water to disperse "field heat".

this is one thing that did well for me and I havent grown cucumbers in many years. Last time was in my mothers back yard and it was yard longs back east. They did well too. I might try them again next year because they were quite crisp and delicious. Im learning how to fertilize them in my hot Arkansas climate. After our rediculously cold crazy spring they were set back a little but are doing quite well now.
