Perennial. Unlike most other penstemons, the lovely pink flowers of this native perennial have a wonderful fragrance that might remind you of roses or honeysuckle. Soaring stems up to 5 feet tall emerge in early summer with a show of tubular flowers that attract hummingbirds, butterflies and bees. Ideal for sandy or gravelly soils with good drainage. Established plants require little watering. Perennial in USDA zones 4-9.

When to sow outside: 2 to 4 weeks before average last frost or late fall, or up to 2 months before average first fall frost.

When to start inside: 6 to 8 weeks before average last frost. Cooler soil temperatures are preferred (around 55°F).
