Pumpkin on a Stick Ornamental Eggplant Organic HEIRLOOM Seeds

Solanum aethiopicum

Item #2025

Annual. 75 days. A real conversation piece in the garden and in floral arrangements. Few people will guess what type of plant it is, but everyone loves the cute, little pumpkin-shaped fruits of this 1800s ornamental eggplant. Often added to fresh or dried florist arrangements. Also called 'Red China' or 'Scarlet Chinese' eggplant, the bitter fruits are used in Asian cooking. Drying instructions inside packet.

Annual

Full Sun

3'-4' tall

Days to Emerge:
10-20 days

Seed Depth:
1/4"

Seed Spacing:
Start indoors; plant 2'-3' apart outside

When to sow outside: 2 to 4 weeks after average last frost, when soil temperature is at least 70°F, and when outside night air temperature is above 60°F.

When to start inside: RECOMMENDED. 6 to 8 weeks before average last frost. Ideal soil temperature for germination is 80°–90°F. Transplant outdoors when soil temperature is at least 60°F, and when night air temperature is above 60°F.

Harvesting: FOR FRESH FLORAL ARRANGEMENTS: Allow fruit to ripen, then cut stems near the base of the plant. Remove leaves carefully since leaves and stems may have thorns. FOR DRIED ARRANGEMENTS: Follow instructions for fresh arrangements, but hang upside-down (so the “fruits” don’t sag) and dry stems in a cool, dry location with good air circulation. Fruits will shrivel as they dry and turn more of an orange color. FOR EATING: Pick fruits when they turn reddish orange. Slightly bitter flavor may become stronger as fruits ripen to red. Use in stir-fries, curries, or other recipes.
