Basil Purple Petra Organic Seeds

Ocimum basilicum

Item #6093

Annual. A mild, sweet taste that is perfect for those who love basil’s flavor. It’s excellent in a variety of dishes, including pesto, pasta, and salads and makes a lovely pink vinegar or oil. Grow as a companion plant for your tomatoes or as an ornamental. Try pairing it with French Marigold Lemon Drop or Bells of Ireland for eye‑popping color.

This packet sows eight 10-foot rows.

Full sun to part shade

24” tall
18”-24” wide

Days to Emerge:
5-10 days

Seed Depth:
1/4”

Seed Spacing:
A group of 3 seeds every 12”

Thinning:
When 2” tall, thin to 1 every 12”

When to sow outside: 1 to 2 weeks after average last frost, and when soil temperatures are at least 60°F. Basil is very sensitive to frost. Must have warm temperatures to germinate. Successive Sowings: Every 2 to 4 weeks for most tender crop.

When to start inside: RECOMMENDED. 6 to 8 weeks before transplanting outside.

Harvesting: Basil is typically harvested before the plant flowers. Flavor is best when harvested in the morning. The young, top leaves taste the best and should be used fresh; the older leaves may be used for vinegar and pesto. Cut a few stems but never more than 1/3 of the plant. Wash stems, gently shake dry, and strip the leaves off the stem. If there is any chance of frost (38°F and below), harvest crop immediately; basil is very frost sensitive.
