The calendula, an old, English-cottage-garden flower is a long-blooming addition to any modern garden. Its gold and orange flowers bloom from spring to fall on fairly drought- and heat-tolerant plants. Grow it for attracting pollinators and its sunny beauty in the garden, then save some blooms for fresh or dried floral arrangements; dried petals can be used in baking or teas. Calendula gets its common name, pot marigold, because the flower resembles a marigold, and has often been used in pots of soup or stew for both color and flavor.

I tested these during the start of winter 2024, and I wanted to see how well they worked with other plants in a pot. It started out pretty slow, but ultimately I got the flowering plant you see in this image. Don’t get me wrong, the flowers are gorgeous, but the rest of the plant seems pretty lanky and bland, at least in a pot. I do think though that this variety would work really well if you have an empty ground space in your front or backyard and you wanna make a pollinator garden or perhaps something colorful.

So I planted this last year and got a couple of blooms. This year it reseeded and I have tons of little seedlings in late August (zone 5). I’m not sure if they will bloom but I did get one plant that’s blooming and she’s very pretty. They don’t get very tall, around 6 inches maybe. Idk if I’ll plant these again but I’ll let it reseed for sure!

Winter sowed these in Zone 8b PNW and they almost all germinated! They grew fast and were blooming by May. One of the flowers is a lovely yellow/white mix, with the rest yellow and orange. Last year these flowers lasted until our first hard frost in January!
