Homegrown honeydews are far superior to grocery store melons. Vine-ripened 'Sweet Delight' has an unbelievably sweet, almost wine-like flavor. Each melon is 7" x 8" weighing between 7 and 8 pounds, with light green flesh and exterior.

Growing Info

Harvesting: Harvesting at the right time is very important with melons. Commercial growers harvest before melons are ripe, forcing them to ripen off the vine, but the last few days of ripening on the vine put a lot of sugars into the melon; so melons taste significantly better when vine ripened. How do you know when 'Sweet Delight' melons are ripe? A ripe melon will have a pleasant, fruity aroma at the blossom end; and a crack will form on the stem right near the point of attachment (this is called the "slip stage"). In a few days, the melon will detach from the vine with little effort and pressure. If it is somewhat difficult to detach the fruit from the vine, the melon is not ready yet. Do not allow to over-ripen.

I have to say that I'm disappointed in Sweet Delight. I have a good plot, with lots of sun. I grow cantaloupe and cucumber very successfully there, but the last several years I have tried to grow Sweet Delight. The plants grow vigorously, but I get very few fruit, and the fruit that I do get really isn't that sweet. I'll be switching to a different kind of honeydew.

We planted seeds packed for 2019 and we have one that is nearly ready to harvest! Very excited! We had no luck with melons last year, different seeds...planted these in a different spot and it seems to have worked. Hoping we harvest correctly and get to enjoy this sweet delight!

Tried this melon last year. I only planted one, (plus a few of several other varieties.) because I have never successfully grown melon to maturity in the past. I am in a new location with a slightly longer growing season. My past location the melons were always a just few days from ripe when the first had freeze happened. This one produced a large melon early in the season, then numerous other melons before the season was over. Loved it's juicy flavor!. what a treat.

This melon is well worth the wait with a harvest of 90 days. It is a tasty, sweet treat with about 10 fruits per vine or plant. I have been planting them for six years now.
