Bush Beans vs. Pole Beans

If you are wondering 'why are my bush beans growing tall like pole beans?' consider this advice...

bush vs pole beans

Because bush beans were developed from pole beans (for condensed and easier harvests), sometimes they can revert to some of the traits of their predecessors by stretching and getting a little lanky before settling into more of a compact bush habit. Thus, why your bush bean appears to be a pole bean.

If you find your bush beans are still getting taller than usual (about 12"-24" tall), here are a couple of things you can do:

  1. Sow directly in the garden or container where they will grow. Seeds that are sown indoors have a tendency to become leggy without full sun, and beans do not transplant well.
  2. Pinch off the top tip to encourage branching.
  3. Monitor environmental factors. Too little sunlight and high-nitrogen soil can also create tall plants.

With just this minimal care, you'll be harvesting loads of fresh, tender green beans in no time!
