Coverage & Planting Details

Coverage This packet sows up to 23 feet of trellised cucumbers.
Row Spacing 36"
Seed Depth ½"
Seed Spacing A group of 2 seeds every 12"
Thinning When 3 leaves, thin to 1 plant every 12"
Germination 5–10 days
Start Indoors 2 to 4 weeks before your average last frost date. Cucumbers are sensitive to root disturbance; sow in biodegradable pots.
Direct Sow RECOMMENDED. 1 to 2 weeks after your average last frost date, and when soil temperature is at least 60°F, ideally 70°–90°F.
Growing & Harvesting Pick, and pick some more! Overly mature cucumbers on the vine will slow production of new cucumbers. Cut the stem rather than pulling at the fruit, as stems are fragile. To increase the quality and storage time, once picked, immediately immerse in cold water to disperse "field heat".

    They Grew, but Yuck

I planted these spacemaker cucumbers after my marketmores refused to germinate. The spacemakers grew well. I have an abundance of the most terrible tasting, rubbery textured cucumbers I’ve ever had. There is no difference if I cut it right off the vine or let it sit in the crisper for a day. They are a terrible tasting variety and I will never plant them again.

    Hey Colleen,
Thank you so much for taking the time to share your review! I’m sorry to hear that your Spacemaster cucumbers didn't meet your expectations in taste and texture.

Cucumbers can actually get a bit bitter due to a natural compound called cucurbitacin, which builds up when the plant experiences environmental stress—most commonly inconsistent watering. Moisture stress can also affect how firm and crisp the fruit turns out.

To help prevent this in the future, here are a few tips to keep your cucumbers happy:

Keep moisture consistent: Try to water a bit more frequently so the soil doesn't completely dry out between waterings.

Adjust for heat: If you're experiencing particularly hot weather, the plants will need an extra boost of water.

Mulch around the base: Adding a layer of mulch helps slow down soil moisture evaporation.

The sweet spot is keeping the soil evenly damp to the touch—not muddy, but never dry. Cucumbers are thirsty plants and need plenty of steady water for both healthy vines and crisp, flavorful fruit!

Additionally, if your Marketmores failed to germinate, that could also be symptomatic of too little water during the germination period. Please feel free to reach out to our Customer Success team with your seed packet information—we'd love to help troubleshoot and get things on track for you!

Thank you again for your valuable feedback. Keep on growing! 🌻

    The Tidy Cucumber Plant

Excellent germination. My only complaint: I personally found these take longer than 60-62 days to start producing. I’m in SE New Mexico Zone 7b. My Hokus cucumbers came in at least a good 10 days earlier than these. The saving grace? They are profilic and may end up giving me more cukes than even Hokus before the season is over.

    Hey Kristina,

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your thoughts in a review. We're thrilled to hear about your excellent germination and that these plants ended up being so prolific for you! We appreciate you noting that they took a bit longer to start producing in your Zone 7b compared to your Hokus cucumbers - that's really helpful feedback for us. It sounds like they're making up for it with an impressive yield, and we love that you're getting such great results overall. Your feedback is invaluable to us, and we're committed to ensuring your experience is positive. I've reached out to you via email to offer assistance. Thank you once again for your input. Keep on growing 🌻

    not impressed with these seedss

I have been gardening for a long time, (40 yrs) and have bought seeds of all varieties shapes and sizes, and different brands from expensive to cheap. The seeds that I have planted from Botanical have been just so so. Pole beans have gone crazy good, swiss chard, radish, peas hit or miss. same with numerous flower seeds. The cucumbers after planting 3 times, I have finally given up. I checked the soil and saw that some had finally sprouted, but never did get through the soil. I won't be buying as many varieties from you in the future. Gardening is getting challenging for us with the extremes in weather so I am not totally blaming the company. I have always had high regards for Botanical so am not going to give totally up. Thanks for asking.

    Will grow despite many odds

I'd written this seedling off as my free range chickens had moved the seed to a spot immediately beside the indeterminate tomatoes. Well, this plant has happily decided to climb the tomatoes and their Florida weave. Even producing fruit! Don't skip this variety. It is resilient.

    Hey Rachel,

What an amazing survival story for your Spacemaster 80 Cucumber! We love that even after your free-range chickens relocated it, this resilient little plant decided to make the best of its new home by climbing those tomato plants. The fact that it's thriving AND producing fruit in such an unexpected spot just shows how tough and adaptable this variety really is! Your chickens might have accidentally discovered the perfect companion planting setup. Thanks for sharing your incredible Spacemaster cucumber resilience story with us! Keep on growing 🌻️
