Deliciously mild beet that doesn't stain like reds! 'Golden Boy' is a stunning, golden-orange fleshed beet with bright green leaves, uniform globes, and refined taproots. Strong, upright stems make for an attractive bunch. Sweetest and most tender when young. Greens are also tender and delicious.

Hardiness: Frost-tolerant biennial grown as an annual

Plant Dimensions: Leaf tops to 12"–18" tall

Variety Information: Bright golden color, uniform, globe-shaped beets up to 3" in diameter.

Attributes: Good for Containers

When to Sow Outside: RECOMMENDED. 2 to 4 weeks before your average last frost date, when soil temperature is at least 45°F, ideally 60°–85°F, for early summer crop. 6 to 8 weeks before your average first fall frost date for late summer/fall crop. Mild Climates: Sow fall through winter.

Thinning: When 2" tall, thin to 1 every 4"

Harvesting: For early spring sowings, harvest beets before summer heat. For late summer sowings, harvest before first heavy freeze. For winter sowings in mild climates, harvest in early spring. Harvest when roots are anywhere from 1"–3" in diameter. The smaller they are, the more tender. Greens are most tender when small, so start harvesting when they are 2" tall. You can take as much as one third of a beet plant's outer leaves without harming the root crop.

Best Golden Beet so far

I've tried some from other companies. These had decent spring germination and bulbed up much faster than any other golden beet I've tried. Delicous flavor and very tender.

Exceptional

This is my 2nd purchase of this seed. If soaked as per package directions it germinates and eventually I get a gorgeous beet with leaves and all. Haven't eaten any yet but I am eagerly awaiting them.

Golden Boy Beets

These also got attacked by the leaf miners, dressed with neem oil, still died. Got a few marble sized beets.

Owner Response: Hi Keri, It sounds like this was a pest issue rather than a seed issue. Since the insects are mining inside the leaves the leaves will need to be removed or the larvae crushed. Neem works to prevent new leaf miners.

Tasty but didn't really mature evenly

These were tasty beets, but most of them didn't really form round root bulbs. The greens were very nice, so I'll probably use the rest of the packet for greens instead of trying to wait for the roots to form.
