Golden Boy Beet Seeds

Beta vulgaris

Deliciously mild beet that doesn't stain like reds! 'Golden Boy' is a stunning, golden-orange fleshed beet with bright green leaves, uniform globes, and refined taproots. Strong, upright stems make for an attractive bunch. Sweetest and most tender when young. Greens are also tender and delicious.

Coverage & Planting Details

Coverage This packet sows up to 19 feet.
Row Spacing 12"
Seed Depth ½"
Seed Spacing 1 seed every 4"
Thinning When 2" tall, thin to 1 every 4"
Germination 5 – 21 days
Start Indoors Not recommended. Root disturbance delays maturity.
Direct Sow RECOMMENDED. 2 to 4 weeks before your average last frost date, when soil temperature is at least 45°F, ideally 60°–85°F, for early summer crop. 6 to 8 weeks before your average first fall frost date for late summer/fall crop. Mild Climates: Sow fall through winter.
Growing & Harvesting For early spring sowings, harvest beets before summer heat. For late summer sowings, harvest before first heavy freeze. For winter sowings in mild climates, harvest in early spring. Harvest when roots are anywhere from 1"–3" in diameter. The smaller they are, the more tender. Greens are most tender when small, so start harvesting when they are 2" tall. You can take as much as one third of a beet plant's outer leaves without harming the root crop.

golden beets are harder to grow

They're more challenging than red beets, but these are coming up nicely and their greens are generous. I have high hopes for some small beets in my salads soon!

    Low germination rate

Shockingly low rate of germination. I was excited about these. Less than 20% of the seeds actually sprouted. Pretty disappointed 😔 bummer.

These were sweet and mild. They didn’t have a strong earthy flavor. We didn’t get a big harvest, but what we got were delicious.
