Coverage & Planting Details

Coverage This packet sows up to 10 mounds.
Row Spacing 3'–4'
Seed Depth ½"–1"
Seed Spacing 2–3 seeds per mound
Thinning When 3 leaves , thin to 1 – 2 plants per mound
Germination 5–10 days
Start Indoors Not recommended except in very short growing seasons, 2 to 4 weeks before transplanting. Roots are sensitive to disturbance; sow in biodegradable pots that can be planted directly into the ground. Transplant when soil temperature is at least 60°F.
Direct Sow RECOMMENDED. 1 to 2 weeks after your average last frost date, and when soil temperature is 70°–85°F.
Growing & Harvesting Harvest frequently to increase yield; squash seem to get monstrous overnight. While edible at almost any size, seeds are less developed in young fruit, therefore more tender. Using a knife or clippers, cut squash off including some of the stem. By including stem, the fruit is sealed and less likely to mold or dry out. Harvesting Blossoms: Look for male, non-fruit producing flowers that have long stems and harvest just before use (female flowers have a swollen mini-squash at the base of the flower and shorter stems).

    Cutest Squash

I was hesitant to plant this as SVB is rampant here in TX even in early spring. This one did not disappoint. I love the nutty taste and this produced early in the season, Thanks Botanical Interest/ Epic Gardening!

Grew through the winter and still fruited

Had a few of these survive Florida frost and continue to grow and produce flowers. Now the temps have changed and the fruit and s surviving and the plants are booming! I love my Patty Pans!

    Failed to germinate

I planted these seeds in the spring and again in the late fall. One seed germinated in the spring and then promptly died. I live in the Houston, TX area. Zone 8/9.

I’ve been gardening and growing veggies for 65 years.

    THE BEST !

This is my absolutely favorite summer squash and has been for 50 years, but you can no longer find it in the grocery stores. So it is with much joy that I look forward to growing it in the summertime. Whether sautéed or steamed or hollowed out a little bit and stuffed with your favorite foods, it will for sure bring you joy. I’ve even sliced it in half and grilled it . Healthy and diet friendly. A+
