Wow, a purple snap pea, tender and delicious! 'Sugar Magnolia' isn't just a famous Grateful Dead song, it is also a beautiful, fine-flavored, edible-pod pea with purple flowers. Long hypertendrils (vigorous, multi-branching tendrils) act as extra sturdy supports for 6'-7' vining plants, creating an airy structure that helps prevent mildew. Some of these open-pollinated peas may be speckled with green, or be fully green.

    Disappointing regression

Fell in love with these beautiful plants and peas years ago, and they have been a annual gardenaddition since. However, the past couple years and particularly this season the plants produced only about 25% purple pods and many snow pea like pods as well. The seed stock appears to be regressed to partent plants resulting in disappointing yield of the desired marketable pods.

    Hi Karen,

Thank you so much for taking the time to leave a review and share your experience with us. I completely understand your disappointment with the changes you’ve noticed in your Sugar Magnolia Snap Pea plants over the past couple of years. As someone who grows them annually, your observations about the reduced purple pod production and the snow pea-like traits are truly valuable feedback.

In warmer weather, Sugar Magnolia can sometimes produce more green pods, while cooler, earlier-season conditions usually bring out stronger purple coloring. Since the pods are naturally mottled, their color can vary from year to year and plant to plant. Still, your feedback is very important to us, and we’re grateful you shared your experience—it helps us continue improving.

If you’d like to reach out to our Customer Service team, we’d be more than happy to troubleshoot this further with you. Thank you again for your input, and for being part of our gardening community.

    Keep on growing 🌻

Grew these on Long Island. Grew to seven or eight feet tall on trellis. Prolific. Will plant again.
