About Blue Lake 274 Bush Bean Seeds
Phaseolus vulgaris
6" long, plump, green, smooth, tender pods, white beans. 'Blue Lake 274' is resistant to bean common mosaic virus and NY-15 mosaic. It was developed in 1961 from the 'Blue Lake' pole bean.

NOTE: In very hot summer areas, skip sowing as high heat approaches; temperatures consistently above 90°F will prevent beans from forming. |
| Growing & Harvesting | Snap beans are ready to pick when the pod "snaps" or breaks in half cleanly. This is when the seeds have just begun to form and the pods are several inches long (depending on the variety). Hold the stem with one hand, and the pod with the other hand to avoid pulling off branches, which will continue to produce. At season's end, plants are great compost material if they are disease-free. |

I have a 10 x 10 plot in a community garden. I grew a 4 foot row, seeds planted 4" apart, and 4 weeks later another parallel row 12 " over. These grew beautifully and produced a grand harvest. I based the 4" plan on the book, Square Foot Gardening.
A neighbor gardener asked for some seeds. I gave her the rest of the package and ordered a second package. I plan to start more soon to try in my California "winter" garden.

My wife and I have a Raised Bed garden in our backyard. We ordered bush bean seeds from Epic Gardening because the seeds we had bought from Home Depot and Lowe’s turned out to be pole beans, not bush beans.
