Late summer-sown carrots are sweetened after having been kissed by light frost; however, harvest before soil freezes, which may destroy the crop. In USDA zone 5 or warmer, carrots can be left in the ground for storage provided they are heavily mulched; harvest as needed on days the ground is not frozen. |

I’ve bought these carrot seeds before. These carrots sprout and grow well, but soil has to be small-grained (fine soil with some sand) and carrots need watering. I grow them in part shade and they do well, though they’re not great at overwintering in the metro DC area (I did have two of about 6 fall carrots that did well). They’re usually flavorful and not bitter if left to grow to a few inches in length; soil quality may be a factor but I’m not very careful about soil type other than fineness.
