Enlarged, bulblike portion of stem forms just above soil surface. Flavor is between an apple and a mild turnip. 'Purple Vienna' has a reddish-purple, slightly flattened globe with tender white interior.

I had four seedlings emerge from my seed packet. And on top of that, they haven’t even grown an inch yet. They came out of the ground three weeks ago. Not sure why. Excellent soil and full sun.

I can't believe this bright purple eye-catching veggie is not renown across the country! Even children find its moist, yet crispy, texture and mildly sweet taste appealing. Not only that, this nutrient-packed vegetable is a cinch to harvest--simply grasp its globular, fleshy stem and pull upwards. Serve it raw--peeled and thinly sliced.

Zone 5b. I grew the Purple Vienna Kohlrabi by direct sowing in a vertical planter. The bulb took a bit longer than expected to mature, but ended up great at harvest.

I love botanical interests. Their germination rate is true to their words. If not, they’ll send you new seeds. This is my first time growing purple kohlrabi and I couldn’t be happier with the results.
