Start Indoors RECOMMENDED: 4 to 6 weeks before your average last frost date. Mild climates: Sow in fall for winter bloom. May also be sown in late fall for spring germination.
Direct Sow 1 to 2 weeks after your average last frost date. Successive Sowings: Every 2 weeks for continuous bloom.
Special Sowing For optimal germination, orlaya seed requires stratification, the process of subjecting seed to moist/cold treatment to break dormancy, which occurs naturally when seed is sown outdoors in fall. When starting seed indoors in spring, sow the seed into a container of moistened seed-starting mix, cover with clear plastic wrap and leave the container in the refrigerator for 3 to 6 weeks, then remove to a warm location. Always keep soil evenly moist.
