These are not perennials and reseed each year once the have been planted. They also need a little frost to get em going after sowing or you could stratify them.

It's not a recommended growing method, but I started my plants indoors in pots several weeks before transplanting in the spring. They actually transplanted very well even though I didn't use biodegradable pots and had to remove them from the pot before planting. I did my best not to disturb the roots, and they grew just fine. The first and second seasons they had very few flowers, about 1 per plant, but this year (season three) each plant has many blooms and the foliage has filled out nicely. The blooms are larger than my fist when open and they have an amazing dark purple center. The seed heads are super interesting as well. The blooms are short-lived, but so fantastic they're worth it. They are truly perennial, even here in Colorado, and I didn't find that I had to protect them from the cold to get them through the winter. When I purchased them, I wasn't sure they would grow well, but I'm glad I gave them a shot!

I got two to grow, planted seedlings in the garden, they did not do very well, but I have hope they will perform better in 2022.

I'm in zone 6a. I direct sow these in ground in early May and they germinated very well. I had to thin them a lot. Supposedly they don't flower the first year. I am looking forward to these beautiful blooms in early spring next year!
