Also called Chinese long beans or asparagus beans, 'Orient Wonder' is a delicious and beautiful, dark green, pole bean. Seeds are slow to develop, so pods stay smooth and slender. 'Orient Wonder' is much more tolerant of weather fluctuations (cool, dry to hot, humid) than traditional green beans. It's easy to grow, prolific, and almost indestructible. Beans are most tender at 12"–18" long, even though they can grow as long as 30".

Variety Info: Yard Long bean is so named because the long, slender pods can reach almost a yard in length, though they are best at 12"–18" long, before seeds start to enlarge. Long, slender, round, stringless pods hang in pairs. Commonly called a bean because it is grown and eaten like snap beans, Yard Long beans are of a different species and actually more closely related to Southern cowpea or black-eyed pea as well as mung beans. Beautiful purple flowers open in the morning beginning in midsummer.

Attributes: Heat Tolerant, Frost Sensitive

Sowing Info

When to Sow Outside: RECOMMENDED. 1 to 2 weeks after your average last frost date, and when soil temperature is at least 65°F, ideally 70°–85°F. Successive Sowings: Every 7 to 14 days up to 80 days before your average first fall frost date. NOTE: In very hot summer areas, skip sowing as high heat approaches; temperatures consistently above 90°F will prevent beans from forming.

When to Start Inside: Not recommended; bean seedlings are sensitive to root disturbance.

Days to Emerge: 6–12 days

Seed Spacing: 1 seed every 6"

Row Spacing: 36"

Growing Info

Harvesting: Yard long beans are ready to pick when the pod snaps or breaks in half cleanly. This is when seeds have just begun to form and the pods are several inches long (depending on the variety). Hold stem with one hand and the pod with the other hand to avoid pulling off branches, which will continue to produce. Harvesting early and often will stimulate flower production for more beans. At seasonÆs end, plants are great compost material if they are disease-free.

    Amazing harvest and wonderful flavor

These long beans exceeded my expectations, both in flavor and in production. Despite a very challenging growing season in the Mid-Atlantic this year, all twelve of the Orient Wonder Pole Yard Long Bean seeds that I’d planted germinated wonderfully and grew very quickly, producing a multitude of delicious green beans throughout the Summer and into early Fall.

    First try at these

These have been fun to grow. A little slow to start in N. California but finally got flowers and beans only to have stink bugs find them. Hopefully I can get a few.

    Hey Kathleen,

Thank you so much for sharing your experience with our Orient Wonder Pole Yard Long Bean Seeds! We absolutely love hearing that these have been fun to grow - there's nothing quite like trying something new in the garden and watching it take off!

Darn those stink bugs. This is the third instar nymph of the southern green stink bug, Nezara viridula. The southern green stink bug starts as an egg, then goes through five instars (basically developmental stages with a moulting process between each) before it's a full adult.

I've sent some information via email to you that I hope will help.

Fun fact: these arthropods have to shed their exoskeleton every time they outgrow it as they mature, so they start out dark and small and gradually get more and more green as they go along. The mature version is all green (like grass green) and is a flat bug with a shield-shaped back
