Common Chives Seeds

Allium schoenoprasum

Chives are super easy to grow, require little maintenance, tolerate drought, and come back year after year. Edible flowers are loved by bees, make a tasty chive vinegar, look and taste great in salads, and dry well for arrangements; foliage and/or flowers add a subtle onion flavor to many dishes. Great for containers; grow indoors for year-round harvest.

About Chives

Allium schoenoprasum

Bright green, slender, hollow leaves with a mild onion flavor; pinkish-purple pom-pom flowers appear in late spring to early summer. If there were an award for "easiest herb to grow", chives would win, hands down. Once you plant chives in your garden, chances are you'll always have them. They can be easily dug up and divided if the clump gets too large. In mild climates, plants are nearly evergreen.

Thinning Not required
Germination 10–15 days
Start Indoors 6 to 8 weeks before your average last frost date.

    Bummed that no seeds germinated

I planted these in raised beds, in a couple different parts of my yard with no results. I was really looking forward to making chive vinegar with my home grown chives.

No germination with direct sow or indoor start

I tried to get these to germinate all season. I first planted them directly sown into the garden, following the timing and temperature instructions. No germination. It was early enough in the season that I also tried to start some in seed starting cells. No germination. I again tried to start some direct sown. Nothing. Not a single seed germinated. Really disappointed because these were the first Botanical Interests seeds that I have tried (and might be the last).

    No germination

Absolutely none of these seeds germinated. They were planted next to many other plant from this company that did just fine. A little sad about it because I really love chives
