This flower has a special meaning to Judy, the co-founder of Botanical Interests. As a child, she would go with her mom to John's Garden Center in San Jose, CA each spring to purchase very tall, bright yellow marigolds to encircle the patio, as her mother loved those big, bright, yellow blossoms. It was a very special flower of Judy's youth, so she named this variety after her mother. In her words, "For me, the Phyllis marigold will remind me of trips to the garden center, spring planting with mom, and her wonderful summer patio parties."

Phyllis is also known as 'Mum Yellow' for its chrysanthemum-like 3" flower made up of hundreds of thin, bright yellow petals. Long stems are great for cut-flower bouquets and arrangements. African Marigold petals are edible with a slightly bitter, citrusy/spice flavor. They make a pretty garnish on rice, salads, or desserts. Fairly drought tolerant.

    UPDATE from my previous review of only 10 days: I've got almost 100% germination of these Phyllis marigolds after two weeks. Love the quality of Botanical Interest's seeds :)

    vigorous seedlings after about 10 days! I got about 50% germination and the amount of seeds in the packet is generous. I'm so excited for these!

    These are beautiful. They look like teddy bear sunflowers. There is also a good amount of blooms in each plant. Will be planting it every year from now on.

    Wow! What a beautiful mum-style marigold! Just spectacular! Phyllis is such a well-behaved front to mid-border companion, behind the Alyssum and next to other compact-bushy marigolds, in front of Snapdragons, alongside Baby's Breath, or even mixed in with attractive border edibles like sweet peppers. Elegant and optimistic Phyllis, with her lush, dark green leaves, and brilliant sun-burst quill petals, is the Fuji mum-marigold centerpiece of your border garden bouquet. Lovely in bud, magnificent in full bloom, she is certainly the Spring May Queen in our Zone 9 Central Florida garden! (Just don't get her blooms wet....she does NOT like the rain, and, like many marigolds, is susceptible to that browning down of blooms once the heavy rains and steamy weather of our Florida tropic summers begins). I'll plant her again this fall, and enjoy her loveliness while the cool dry to warm dry weather persists.I have pictures of Phyllis (taken during her peak bloom here in late May) to share, but I can't figure out how to embed them here in my review (will email to Botanical Interests and see if they'll add them for me).
