How to Use
FAQ

Q: Can I place the beds on hard surfaces such as concrete?

A: If you're placing your bed on pavers, concrete, tiles, a porch, or anything you don't want to stain, it’s better to add a bed liner or geotextile fabric. Go ahead and place your box in position, then put the fabric on the bottom of the bed from the inside. Run any excess fabric up each side and then fill your bed with soil. The fabric allows water to drain freely, but it keeps soil from messing up your floor. Optional: To really protect the surface, place thick builder's plastic down before putting your bed into position. Once the bed is filled, any excess plastic can be trimmed around the edge of the garden bed with an Exacto knife.

Q: Can I combine beds?

A: Yes, you can combine two beds together. We always recommend installing bracing bars when combining beds to prevent bowing due to soil pressure. For detailed instructions, check out growepic.co/bracinginfo.

Q: What are the benefits of raised bed gardening?

A: Raised bed gardening reduces pest pressures, elevates the garden to a more comfortable working level, and is a great way to guarantee you have quality soil to grow in. You’ll also have fewer weeds to deal with and an easier time clearing out any that pop up. Also, your soil doesn’t become compacted like an in-ground bed. It gives you better control over your gardening environment.

Q: What can I grow in my Raised Beds?

A: Pretty much anything. We’ve got some ideas to get you started, but really, the sky’s the limit.

Q: How long will these beds last?

A: All of our Birdies Beds are constructed from 24-gauge, cold-rolled steel with an aluminum-zinc (aluzinc) alloy coating. The aluzinc steel is up to 7x more rust-resistant and corrosion-resistant than standard galvanized metal. Like all iron-based metals, steel will rust eventually, but with proper care, these beds will last you 20+ years. You can improve the longevity of your beds by keeping your soil free-draining, within a 6-7 pH range, and not using fresh chicken manure.

Q: Are they safe to grow food in?

A: All the materials used are 100% food-safe and will not leach into your soil, allowing for safe, healthy food production. Our aluzinc steel raised beds are coated with a non-toxic, USDA-approved paint and the hardware supplied is food-grade stainless steel.

Q: Will the beds get too hot in summer or in hot climates?

A: No, they won’t. Compared to standard concrete and plastic beds (especially if made from a dark color or material) our metal raised beds will outperform all of them, maintaining even, cool soil temperatures. The superior

reflectivity of the aluzinc steel keeps most of the heat from ever passing into the soil. And, that bulk of soil in your bed will quickly absorb and spread the small amount of heat it gets from touching the stainless steel panels.

Q: Are the beds bottomless?

A: Yes, that means no drainage holes to drill, and the soil gets to touch the ground, so you end up with superior, microbe-rich soil and healthier plants.

Q: What is the thickness of your metal beds?

A: All Birdies Beds use 24-gauge, cold-rolled, Aluzinc-coated steel.

Q: Can the safety edging handle freezing temps?

A: Yes, the safety edging is UV-safe and designed to withstand both freezing and hot temperatures.

Jumbo Modular Metal Raised Garden Bed Kit - 29” Tall
    Just what we needed!

We've been wanting to get a metal raised garden bed for a while and we finally went for it this year. The bed was pretty easy to assemble with two people and it is everything I hoped it would be! We filled it part way with stumps and wood waste and then layered old leaves and trimmings from a yew tree in our yard on top of that. The top half is a mix of compost, vermiculite and sphagnum moss as suggested by the square foot garden method. Since we got the tall 29" bed it was more expensive to fill but doing the layered approach helped to lower the costs and I'm excited to have a garden that I can harvest from without hurting my back.

    Excellent thus far!

Not as easy to put together as other beds I've purchased, but the height, quality if parts, and rounded edges can't be beat! Worth the effort! I bought the tallest units and made them into 10' x 2' beds. I then created a tunnel with cattle panel to grow vertically. I hope the result a year from note matches my vision due for project. See image.

    Hey Andrea,

What an amazing setup you've created with our Jumbo Modular Metal Raised Garden Bed Kit! We love seeing how you've transformed those 29" tall units into those perfect 10' x 2' beds. The cattle panel tunnel idea for vertical growing is absolutely brilliant! While we know the assembly takes a bit more effort, we're so glad you found the height, quality, and those rounded edges worth it. Your vision sounds incredible and we can't wait to see how everything grows over the next year! Thanks for sharing your creative raised bed project with us! Keep on growing 🌻️

    So grateful for these beds!

I'd been using metal 12" beds for years despite a bad back, but after a car accident created further mobility issues, I finally went for the taller beds. These have been such a game-changer! Once you get over the challenge of filling them, even just planting out the summer garden is a breeze. I have six of the medium (at 4x3) and two large (at 8x4) and being able to get everything planted out in a day was incredible enough, but not having to squat down and get back up has been a wild improvement. These are also tall enough to keep the bunnies out, so thus far, no lost green beans or other veggies. These are very easy to assemble, despite their size. I only took off one star because while I'm super happy to have a safety edge (my previous metal beds were death traps) I find that the exposed bolts on the inside can still lead to scrapes, and also snags and tears in bird netting, gardening gloves, and other gardening accessories I use.

    Hey Laura,

We're so grateful you shared your experience with the Medium Modular Metal Raised Garden Bed Kits! What a transformation from those 12" beds - we can only imagine how much easier gardening has become for your back and mobility. Having six medium and two large beds sounds like an incredible setup, and being able to plant out your entire summer garden in just one day without all that squatting is amazing! We love that they're keeping those pesky bunnies away from your green beans too.

Thanks for the honest feedback about the interior bolts - that's really valuable insight for us and other gardeners considering these beds. It sounds like despite that minor issue, these taller beds have been a total game-changer for making gardening accessible and enjoyable again! Thanks for sharing your raised bed success with us! Keep on growing 🌻️
