Early Jalapeño Chile Pepper Seeds

Capsicum annuum

Lots of bold flavor in a small, 3" pepper, 'Early Jalapeño' is better adapted to cooler climates than other jalapeños. Incredibly versatile, they're hot enough to add a little kick to your favorite dish, but mild enough for any meal. Enjoy green or allow to ripen to red for a sweeter, bolder flavor. Jalapeños rate 2,500–5,000 Scoville heat units (medium hot).

Coverage & Planting Details

Coverage This packet sows up to 56 plants when started indoors.
Row Spacing 24"–36"
Seed Depth ¼"
Seed Spacing Start Indoors
Thinning Start indoors, plant seedlings 18" – 24" apart outside
Germination 10–25 days
Start Indoors RECOMMENDED. 8 to 10 weeks before transplanting. Ideal soil temperature for germination is 70°–90°F. Transplant seedlings outside 2 to 4 weeks after your average last frost date, and when daytime temperatures are at least 70°F, and nighttime temperatures are at least 55°F. Mild Climates: May be sown in late summer for fall/winter crop.
Direct Sow For Mild Climates only: 2 to 4 weeks after average last frost, when soil temperature is at least 70°F.
Growing & Harvesting Harvest when mature size and firm. Jalapeños can be harvested green or red, and are hottest just when they begin to turn from green to red. When harvesting, take care to avoid touching the interior of any broken peppers, as the capsaicin is an extreme irritant, especially to the eyes. Wash hands thoroughly after harvesting or wear gloves to harvest peppers.

    Poor germination

I was only able to get these to germinate in a paper towel, in a ziploc bag, left in the sun. Heat pads, soil, all that, no dice, and even being so precious with them I only ended up with two plants out of the whole packet and two attempts.

    My standard Jalapeño

Whether these are truly early producing is up to debate, but they sure are spicy. I start them around February indoors and plant them outside as bedding sized plants in May. I like to let them fully ripen and pick them to spice up my meals.

    Prolific and easy container growers

This is our first year growing anything so take this with a grain of salt but - plant these seeds! We’re in zone 10a, growing in container bags w/fox farms soil (mix? Idk in the reviewer and seed buyer in our family, my partner is the dirt guy). We started these indoors on heat mats in epic 6 cells, everything sprouted. Moved them up to 4 cells, eventually to bags - and some are planted double some single. In any case - they’ve all done so well! They’re so tasty, beautiful (on and off the plant!), prolific, and we’re so proud 😂

    Hey Alex G.,

What a fantastic review! We're absolutely thrilled to hear that your Early Jalapeño Chile Peppers have been such a huge success, especially for your first year growing anything - you're clearly naturals at this!

Your growing journey sounds like it went absolutely perfectly - from those epic 6 cells on heat mats with 100% germination all the way through to thriving container bags in zone 10a! It's so exciting when everything just clicks like that, and the fact that both your single and double plantings are doing so well shows these peppers are really happy in your setup.

We love that you're getting the full Early Jalapeño experience - great taste, beautiful plants, and that prolific harvest that makes you feel so proud (as you absolutely should be!). There's something so special about Early Jalapeños because they really deliver on all fronts: they're reliable growers, they look gorgeous both on the plant and harvested, and that flavor is just perfect for so many dishes.

Container growing can sometimes be tricky with peppers, but it sounds like you and your partner have nailed the perfect combination with those container bags and Fox Farms soil! Your teamwork approach - you handling the seed selection and your partner being the "dirt guy" - is such a great way to tackle gardening together.

Your experience will be so encouraging for other first-time growers who might be hesitant about starting peppers from seed!

Thank you so much for sharing such an enthusiastic review about your growing success!

    Prolific & easy container grow

First year growing (anything) so take this with a grain of salt. Started indoors zone 10a, moved outside and into various sizes of bags - doubled some up and grew some individually with bamboo supports. They’re producing so very much more than we need, but they’re beautiful (on and off the plant), tasty, and we’re so proud of them lol
