Coverage & Planting Details

Coverage This packet sows up to 9 mounds.
Row Spacing 4'–6'
Seed Depth ½–1"
Seed Spacing 2–3 seeds per mound
Thinning When 3" leaves, thin to 1–2 per mound
Germination 5–10 days
Start Indoors Not recommended except in very short growing seasons, 2 to 4 weeks before transplanting. Roots are sensitive to disturbance; sow in biodegradable pots that can be planted directly into the ground. Transplant when soil temperature is at least 60°F.
Direct Sow RECOMMENDED. 1 to 2 weeks after your average last frost date, and when soil temperature is 70°–85°F.
Growing & Harvesting Harvest when the squash's rind is hard enough that you can't dent it with your fingernail and before first frost. Cut stem, (don't break it off) leaving 2" of stem attached, which keeps the squash whole, leaving no opening for infection. Though fruits are hard and may seem indestructible, treat them gently; bruising can spoil squash.

Tasty with a zest for life!

It is entirely possible that the first time you taste this squash you will become incredibly angry that it is not available in the grocery store. Then, this plant will quadruple in size, and you will be filled with joy at your abundance of scrumptious squash.

I directly sowed this about 4 weeks after our last frost and had no issues with germination. I spaced them about 2 ft apart with a trellis, but you can see that these plants demanded more room to grow - in early July. It's very prolific - there are 20 uneaten squash on my counter right now and about 10 more to be harvested in the next 3 days. You absolutely will not regret this plant!
